The claim

Retinol results without irritation or pregnancy concerns.

What the evidence says

One randomized double-blind trial found bakuchiol 0.5% twice daily comparable to retinol 0.5% nightly for photoaging over 12 weeks, with less scaling. It is one trial, against cosmetic retinol rather than a prescription retinoid, and pregnancy safety has not been formally studied; 'not a retinoid' is not the same as 'tested in pregnancy'.

Who should skip it

Anyone expecting tretinoin-level results; pregnant people should ask a clinician rather than assume safety from marketing.

What to do instead, or as well

Fine as a gentle option; a retinoid remains the evidence-based choice when tolerated and not pregnant.
