The short version

Effective but slow and expensive. Black ink responds best, some colors barely respond, and complete clearance is not guaranteed.

What the cost figure means

$697 laser-treatment category average. ASPS category average for laser skin treatments, which includes tattoo removal; per-session prices scale with tattoo size, and 6–12 or more sessions are common. ASPS publishes this national average physician fee on its cost page as its latest statistic without stating the survey year, and its 2025 report no longer includes minimally invasive fees.

$200–$500 per session

Benefits, limitations, and risks

Realistic benefits

  • The only broadly effective removal method
  • Can fade a tattoo before a cover-up
  • Newer devices reduce sessions for some colors

Limitations

  • Many sessions over a year or more
  • Greens, yellows, and light blues respond poorly
  • Cosmetic tattoo ink can darken paradoxically

Common effects

  • Blistering and crusting
  • Swelling and pain
  • Temporary lightening or darkening

Serious risks

  • Permanent hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation
  • Scarring, more likely with picking or infection
  • Allergic reaction to released ink

Candidacy and pause signs

Usually considered for: Adults with realistic expectations about number of sessions and residual ink; deeper skin tones need an operator experienced with 1064 nm settings.

Pause before booking if

You are tanned, have keloid tendency, take photosensitizing medication, want cosmetic (lip or brow) tattoo removed without a test spot, or the provider cannot name the wavelengths.

Operator, setting, and regulation

Who performs it in the U.S.: Physicians, nurses, and in some states technicians under medical supervision; state laser rules vary.

Regulatory status: Lasers are FDA-regulated medical devices cleared for tattoo removal; FDA notes that tattoo removal creams and do-it-yourself methods are not approved and can cause harm.

Rules differ by state and by country. A product approved in one market may be unapproved in another, and the same device can be used within or outside its cleared indication.

Questions to ask before you pay a deposit

  1. Which wavelengths will you use for my ink colors?
  2. How many sessions do you estimate, and what is the total?
  3. What is your test-spot policy for cosmetic tattoos?
